We've got a couple of important bits of news to share with our friends and customers.

First off, a schedule change.

Starting September 30, 2013, YesterNook will be closing on Mondays. All other hours will remain the same Tuesday thru Saturday 10-6 and Sunday 12-5. We hope you'll visit then!

Secondly, a bit of fun news.

The second YesterNook Parking Lot Sale will be Saturday, October 12th  from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Just like before, vendors will be set up with special deals, plus there will be space available for others to come sell their items.  Space rental will be ten dollars and space is limited, so call or email the store to sign up soon.  We had a great time with the first one, and the response was super.  We hope to see many of you there on the 12th.

September News

Let us be the first to wish you, our friends and customers, a happy and safe Labor Day weekend!  If you are looking for something to do on your Monday holiday, YesterNook will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and we would love to see you.  If you have to run to Kroger to get some charcoal or something, you can fit us in for a visit too, since we are right near the one on Goss Avenue.

A new month always brings about news and changes, and September is no different.  We'll have a couple of new vendors starting, so you'll want to come by and check them out.  Just ask at the counter for the location of the new booths.

This week, we got in a huge load of stuff from three different estates, so the store is overrun with chests, chairs, tables, and some really cool trunks.  You can find picture of all these items at our Facebook page.

July News

Happy July, everyone!  As usual, there is a lot going on at YesterNook that we would like to share with you.

First, we have to tell you that two of our long-time vendors and friends have left us.  Kendall and Marilyn were part of the store from the beginning, so it's a little hard to see them go.  We wish them well and know that you all do too.  However, their moving has led to a bit of a shuffle on the first floor.

Booth 511 has expanded to fill the whole space by the front windows.  They also still have a space upstairs in the ballroom.  Booth 459 is moving into Marilyn's old space, while 309 is expanding back into two spaces on first floor.  This means there will be lots of new stuff to check out in those rooms past the register when you walk in!

We'd also like to welcome Barbara (Booth 621) to the Ballroom upstairs.  We're glad that she has joined us.  Speaking of new people, another space just rented, so look for a new vendor in Edna in the next few days.

This is a big week in the life of our country, as we celebrate our most important national holiday, Independence Day.  YesterNook will be open on July 4, but only until about 3:00 p.m.  Stop by as you head out to Kroger to pick up stuff for your cook-out!  We'll be open regular hours (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) on Friday, July 5.

Whatever you're doing this July 4, please stay safe.  Be careful with your sparklers.  Wear good sunscreen and drink plenty of water. We want to have you visit us for a long time to come!

June News

It's another new month at YesterNook, and that means it's time for news and updates!  Well, actually, it's a new month everywhere, not just at YesterNook, but that still means that we have some news from your favorite vintage/secondhand vendor establishment!

First off, a big welcome to Kim (Booth 303) who just opened up her space in Mayme's Ballroom upstairs.  She's our newest vendor and you'll want to check her space out.  Right now, she has an awesome selection of stuff from an old general store for sale!  She's located about halfway down in the ballroom on the right.  You'll know you're there when you see the puppet stage.  Yes, I said puppet stage!  Told you that you'd want to check her out.

The outside of the building is getting a beautiful facelift, courtesy of the talents of Larry from booth 511!  He's been landscaping and performing other beautification tasks for several weeks now, and the place looks lovely.  You'll want to stop by and see it in person, but you can also see photos on our Facebook page.

Some of your favorite vendors have moved to new spots or expanded their spaces.  If you can't find someone in their regular space, ask Patti or Sharron to show you where they are now.  They'll be glad to help.  Also, be sure to ask Patti about the "Hamster Happiness."

Finally, don't forget that Saturday is the day for our big, big Outdoor Sale!  You do not want to miss this one.  There are over 30 sellers participating!  All the spaces have been spoken for, so it will be a full house!  Several vendors will be selling things at drastic markdown, while many of our friends have decided to join us with spaces.  It looks to be a fun time for sure.  Who knows what you'll find?  We'll also have food for sale as well.

We know we'll see you on Saturday!

May News

We've got a couple more quick announcements to share with you all, then we'll let you get back to your Derby week festivities.  Speaking of the derby, YesterNook will close at 2 p.m. on Derby Day, which is this Saturday, in case it's slipped your mind.  That will give you plenty of time to do some quick vintage shopping in the morning and still get home for your Derby party that afternoon.

If you've ever thought about having a booth in a store like YesterNook, this could be your chance.  There is a booth coming available on May 1.  The space is located upstairs in that large room called Mayne's Ballroom, and the rent is $100 a month.  To see the space or get more information, stop by the store during regular business hours, call, or email.  But do it soon!  Spaces at yesterNook don't stay open for long!

Mark you calendars now for the next YesterNook special event!

June 8, 2013
8:00 am to 4:00 pm
YesterNook Outdoor Sale
(Rain Date June 15)

Spaces are available for this event, if you would like to sell something.  The rental fee is $5 for the day.  Call the store to reserve a spot or to get more information.  The number is listed above in the blog description.

That's all the news for this month!  Please have a safe and happy Derby!  If you win big at the track, don't forget to pay us a visit afterwards to celebrate!

News, Notes, Updates and Thoughts

We've got a lot to share with you all this time around, so let's get started!

First off, we have a new mantle display in the store front lobby.

Don't you love the horseshoes?  How appropriate for Derbytime!  As usual, the items in the display are for sale.  The mantle itself, however, is not.

While we're talking about decor and beautification, Yesternook (along with other area businesses) were gifted with lovely flowerpots and flowers in front of the store, courtesy of our friends in the Schnitzelburg Area Community Council and Go Green Germantown.  Thanks, friends!  Keep stopping by the store to see how they grown and fill out the pots.

Over the weekend, the Kentucky Derby Festival began with the lights, planes and noise of Thunder Over Louisville.  From now until the first Saturday in May, there will be events and happenings all over town.  It will be a great time of celebrating Louisville, the Kentucky Derby, and our shared history.  We hope that all of our friends will have a happy and safe Derbytime.

Please remember to keep supporting YesterNook and other local small businesses during this time.  Stop in the store and see if we can help you with any of your Derby festivity needs.  Do you need a Derby hat?

Or maybe you want to have a retro-themed Derby Party and need some cool aluminum folding lawn chairs?

You never know what you can find at YesterNook!

After Derby comes Mother's Day and, close after that, graduations!  You can always find a unique gift for Mom, Grandma, or anyone else in the booths at YesterNook.  If you have young family members moving out for school, remember that we have a wide variety of furniture at very reasonable prices.  YesterNook has helped many people furnish their first apartments.

Finally, if you enjoyed last week's blog and would like to see the pictures that inspired the story up close, here's where you can find them:
  • Gussie and Bertie are in Booth 62, upstairs
  • Coraline is hanging in the front stairway, right before you get to the second floor
  • Earl and Dorcas are in Booth 89, downstairs
Don't forget to keep checking the YesterNook Facebook page.  Several vendors are having sales right now, and you can get all the details there!

April News

Hey!  Have you heard the latest?

YesterNook owner Patti Cape has decided to paint the building!  It's going to be neon lime green with giant electric violet polka dots!  She says that it will "make the store stand out a little more in the neighborhood."

Not only that, but she's instituting a new dress code.  From now on, she and Sharron will be working the register wearing gorilla costumes!  We know you'll want to drop by and check that out!

Oh yeah, one more thing:

BELATED APRIL FOOLS!

How about some real YesterNook news now?

We hope all of our friends had a nice Easter and that folks in Louisville are enjoying this Spring Break week.  We do have some real updates to pass on to you.

First off, we have some new vendors to share with you!

Kim and Melissa (Booths 876 and 295) will be moving into Mayme's Ballroom, the large room upstairs with several vendors in it.  They'll be the last booth on the left as you walk to the end of the room.  They'll be selling a variety of items, including some that are handmade.  You'll want to check that out for sure!

Stacy and Anita (Booths 109 and 714) will be in Amelia, which is at the top of the back stair case.  Pass through Maggie into Amelia and you'll find them.  They've been YesterNook customers for a long time and are excited about having a booth.  We're sure that you will want to support them.

All four are first-time vendors, and we welcome them to the YesterNook family.

Bob and Jody (Booth 459) are moving from the Ballroom downstairs into Edith, the big room just past the register.  They'll be on the right as you come into the room.  Look for them to have more furniture, in addition to their fabulous array of smalls and toys!

Several of our friends have inquired about Kathy (Booth 240--by the back door).  You're noticing that we haven't seen as many of her fine painted projects around.  We're just like you.  We miss them (and her!) as well.  She's been having some health problems that have made her put the paint brush down for a bit.  She's on the mend, though, and hopes to be back with us real soon! Please join us in sending her well wishes.

Speaking of painting, we want to remind you that we do buy items that might need a coat of paint or have a little rust on them.  Such items go well in the rough room, where other people looking for projects can find them.  Give us a call or drop us an email for more details.

Transformations

Spring is a time for changes and transformations.  Flowers that have been dormant in the ground for months bloom.  Caterpillars spin their cocoons to emerge later as butterflies.  Already the days are longer, indicating that the long dark nights of winter are coming to an end.

We often extend these transformations to our surroundings.  Now is the time for yard work and spring cleaning.  It's time to start on those warmer weather projects!

We understand projects and transformations at YesterNook.  Take a look at this caterpillar of a desk:

Now, look at the butterfly it turned into, with a little bit of paint and elbow grease:

How cool is that?  Change is in the air at YesterNook!  At any given time, you can find lots of pieces in the store that have been given a new lease on life.  Keep checking our Facebook page for photos of the latest creations!

If you are more of the DIY type of person, don't forget we have a rough room full of projects in the making.  You may also find the perfect project piece sitting in a booth in the store.  You wouldn't be the first one to do so!

We love to hear about the things that our customers and friends have created with their YesterNook finds.  Send us a photo and we'll be glad to feature it here on the blog or on Facebook.

March News

We have a few bits of news to share with you all from the halls and booths of YesterNook.

First off, a couple of vendors are expanding their spaces!  That means that they'll be bringing more of the great items that you have grown to love and appreciate.  They can do this in part because of the love and support that you have shown for their booths, so pat yourself on the back for a job well done!

In Mayme's Ballroom, Carmine and Larry (Booth 511) now have spaces on both sides of the aisle.  Their original booth is right next to the Tiny Bookshop, and the new one is right across from it.  With this new space, they now have room to showcase some furniture and larger items.

Then there's Beth (Booth 524). She's in the room called Claude, which is at the end of the hall on the left.  She has gone from half the room to the whole room!  Look for the added space to give her room to bring in many more special items as well.

Finally, we added a really cool vendor in February and forgot to make mention of it here.  Allow us to rectify that and tell you that Laurel in Booth 9 has a wonderful assortment of things.  Laurel has been at Sparrow for many years, and was a regular YesterNook shopper from day one.  She also has her own shop in Wisconsin.  She has a lot of experience and knowledge and uses it to bring you some of the best items.  Check her booth out.

January News: What's the Good Word?

We'd like to extend a YesterNook welcome to our newest vendors, Debbie and Gary, who are using booth number 333!  Stop by and check out their space.  Maybe you'll even get the chance to meet them and say "Howdy!"

By the way, most vendors (not just the new ones) like it when you take a chance to chat when you find them in their booth.  I know it may look like they are very busy adding new merchandise and rearranging things, but many of them like to take time out and chat with customers, even if it's just to say "Hello."

Feedback from customers is very important to vendors, but it's something that they don't often get, because they come and go at such different times throughout the week.  We cannot tell you how much it can make a vendor's day to hear from somebody that shops in their space on a regular basis.  Many vendors are also collectors, so they like to chat with people who share their interests.

If you are looking for something in particular, it never hurts to ask a vendor to keep an eye out for it.  For example, let's say that you are into Mission style furniture, but are having a hard time finding a certain piece.  Talking with a vendor who also knows about Mission furniture may turn up some new leads for you.  It certainly helps a vendor make decisions about things to buy for their booth.

YesterNook is as much about the relationships that people form in the store as the things we sell here.  Next time you stop by, take some extra time to chat.  We'll all be glad that you did.

December News

The halls are all decked, so it must be December!  You can see it right from the moment you come in the door.

Yes, there's Christmas just about everywhere you look in YesterNook right now.

But that's not all that's new in the store.  Not by a long shot.  There's always something happening at YesterNook.

First off, we need to give a slightly belated YesterNook welcome to a vendor who started in November.  Bridgette (Booth 021) is located in the large room called Mayme's Ballroom upstairs.  She's located about halfway down the aisle in that room on the right.

It's going to be a literary weekend at this store this coming Saturday and Sunday, courtesy of the Tiny Bookshop!  We've already announced Chef Nancy Russman's appearance on Saturday, December 15.  On Sunday, December 16, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, Kadie Engstrom will be on hand to talk about her book, "Pathway Through the Past: A Timeline Tour of Historic Sites in the Louisville Metropolitan Area."  If you are at all interested in historic buildings and locations in Louisville, you do not want to miss this one.

Ms. Engstrom has worked with the historic steamboat Belle of Louisville in several capacities since 1972, and has been Education Coordinator since 1992. Kadie has also developed and facilitated many educational experiences for children and adults. She now chairs the Kentuckiana Heritage Consortium, a networking group of representatives of historic sites in the metropolitan area.

Kadie has woven the stories of these historic sites into her book "Pathway Through the Past: A Timeline Tour of Historic Sites in the Louisville Metropolitan Area." Together with other sites and events, she traces the Louisville-area's history from the late 1700s to the modern day.  It’s a perfect gift to give yourself or someone else, and the proceeds will benefit the work of the consortium. Copies purchased from the Tiny Bookshop in YesterNook will receive a 10 percent discount from
the list price.

The Tiny Bookshop is also located upstairs in Mayme's Ballroom.  It's on the left as you go down the aisle.  You'll recognize it by the distinctive black bookshelves.

If you go downstairs to Lizzie's Lounge, be sure to look into the new Agnes Oakley room.  Located in the side room at the bottom of the stairs, where the Christmas Cavern used to be, this room is now dedicated to antiques and primitives.  There's lots of neat stuff down there.

The room is named for Agnes Oakley, the maternal great-grandmother of YesterNook owner Pattie Cape.

Speaking of space names, next time you are waiting to be checked out, glance up at the wall to the left of the register.  You'll see that the cashier space has now been named for Lonnie, Patti's paternal great-grandfather.

It's been a really busy December so far at the store.  As always, we appreciate your support.  Please keep checking in often.  Vendors bring in new items every day.  If you just can't decide what to get that special person for Christmas, YesterNook also has gift certificates.  Ask about them at the counter.

The store will be open regular hours for the rest of the month, but will be closed December 24 and 25 and also on December 31 and January 1.  We hope all of our YesterNook friends have a happy and safe holiday season.

November News

Welcome to November, everyone!  The year is quickly winding down, isn't it?  Where does the time go?  It's getting cooler and the days are getting shorter.  The time changes tomorrow.  Soon, the outdoors will be cold and dreary, so you'll want to come inside YesterNook, where it's always warm and festive!

We've got three new vendors starting this month to add to that warmth.  Be sure to head upstairs next time you're in, so you can check them all out.  In the front half of Claude, new vendor Robin is in Booth 777.  That sure sounds like a lucky booth number to us, so you're sure to find a treasure there.  In Edna, in the closet area, you'll find Shelly and Lisa, who are starting Booth 93.  We'd like to extend a big YesterNook welcome to all of them and encourage everyone to check them out.  It means a lot to vendors to know that customers like visiting their booths.

Since everyone's thoughts are turning to the holidays, we'd like to go ahead and let you know the Thanksgiving hours for the store:

Wednesday, November 21, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Thursday, November 22, CLOSED FOR THANKSGIVING
Friday, November 23, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

We'd like to ask that you remember YesterNook and all of your other favorite local businesses this year as you shop for the holidays.  We'll be returning to this theme a few times this month in the blog.

Don't forget to check out the store Facebook page, which updates constantly with pics of new merchandise!  Many vendors also post on Craigslist, so do a search for YesterNook there from time to time to see what's up!  We look forward to seeing you and serving you this month.

October News

Wow!  The weather sure turned fall-ish in a hurry, didn't it?  Just remember that it doesn't matter how wet and cool it is outside, it's always warm and dry inside YesterNook!

There's a lot happening this month at the store, so please be sure to stop by and check them out!

First off, we have some new vendors!  All of them are upstairs, so you'll have three new reasons to make the climb.  Booth 524 is being operated by Beth and her family--brother, sister-in-law, sisters, and Mom and Dad.  The more the merrier, right? Be sure to check out this family affair in the back part of the room called Claude.

What's that?  You don't know where Claude is?  Just ask at the register!  You don't know why we would name a room "Claude"?  Keep checking the blog here!  We'll be explaining Claude, Godfrey, Lizzie and all the other room names in a couple weeks.

Other new vendors are Booth 720 in Mayme's Ballroom.  That's the big room with lots of booths in it.  Eric and Shane are running that booth.  It's the first one in the room, right when you come through the door.  Finally, Booth 264 and 921 are sharing a space in Edna, the first room on the left at the top of the stairs.  These booths are run by Teresa and Pauline and they're in the spot where the Hallmark cards used to be.

Three new sets of vendors mean lots of new stuff to browse through and check out.  Don't forget that all of our vendors update their spaces several times a month, so there's almost always something new to see.

October is bringing new stuff to the blog, as well.  Besides posting about the room names, we're going to begin our vendor spotlights next week.  We're hoping that you'll enjoy finding out more about the people who are bringing you such great stuff.

As always, our Facebook page updates practically every day.  You can also go to the Louisville Craigslist page and do a search for YesterNook to find details about some of the items vendors have for sale.  The store web presence will be expanding this month, as the YesterNook web page rolls out.  Keep checking here for details!

Finally, be sure to mark October 20 in your calendar.  That's the day of the YesterNook Autumn Event.  Yes, it's been a year already.  Can you believe it?  There will be special things happening on October 20 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. to celebrate and to thank you for being a part of this amazing trip.  Please plan to join us.  There's a flyer with more information at the store now.  Here's a copy for those who can't wait.  Look like it will be a fun time.

Thanks for being a part of the YesterNook experience.  We appreciate each one of you.

Lounging Around

Have you been to Lizzie's Lounge yet?  No, it's not the newest hot nightspot in Louisville!  We're talking about the brand new lounge and snack area at YesterNook.

Located downstairs, Lizzie's Lounge has plenty of places to sit and take a load off, while you think about the many wonderful things in the store that you want to purchase.  You can get your second wind and get back to shopping!

There are snacks and drinks available.  Everything is sold on the honor system.  You simply make your selection and leave your money in the box.  If you need change, you can get it upstairs at the register.

There are plenty of idea books and magazines to leaf through for inspiration and ideas.  Or you can just stare at the wonder of the Apron Wall!  It's kind of mesmerizing.

Yes, everything down there is for sale!  You can even drop in on Mr Whipple!  (Don't worry.  He's a perfect gentleman.)

Lizzie's Lounge was painted and designed by Kathy (Booth 240).  We think she did a super job!  Thanks for all the hard work!

To get to Lizzie's Lounge, simply take the stairs down from the first floor.  You'll find the lounge right at the foot of the stairs.

Feel free to sit a bit and chat or just relax.  YesterNook owner Patti Cape has said that she sometimes finds customers who have ended up down there and have chosen to hang out for a while.  Why don't you come down and join them?

Have You Seen This?

If you haven't been to the store in a while, you'll definitely be surprised by what you find immediately inside the front door.

It's our new Autumn Welcome!  Isn't it awesome?

Kind of makes you want to sit down in front of that fireplace and have a mug of apple cider.

Yes, everything in the display is for sale!

Brad from Booth 3 put it all together for the store.  Nice work!

Watch for the scene to change and evolve throughout the Fall Festivities and Winter Holidays!

It just goes to show that there's always something new at YesterNook.  Come check us out!
