July News

Happy July, everyone!  As usual, there is a lot going on at YesterNook that we would like to share with you.

First, we have to tell you that two of our long-time vendors and friends have left us.  Kendall and Marilyn were part of the store from the beginning, so it's a little hard to see them go.  We wish them well and know that you all do too.  However, their moving has led to a bit of a shuffle on the first floor.

Booth 511 has expanded to fill the whole space by the front windows.  They also still have a space upstairs in the ballroom.  Booth 459 is moving into Marilyn's old space, while 309 is expanding back into two spaces on first floor.  This means there will be lots of new stuff to check out in those rooms past the register when you walk in!

We'd also like to welcome Barbara (Booth 621) to the Ballroom upstairs.  We're glad that she has joined us.  Speaking of new people, another space just rented, so look for a new vendor in Edna in the next few days.

This is a big week in the life of our country, as we celebrate our most important national holiday, Independence Day.  YesterNook will be open on July 4, but only until about 3:00 p.m.  Stop by as you head out to Kroger to pick up stuff for your cook-out!  We'll be open regular hours (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) on Friday, July 5.

Whatever you're doing this July 4, please stay safe.  Be careful with your sparklers.  Wear good sunscreen and drink plenty of water. We want to have you visit us for a long time to come!

On Mothers

Some mothers like barkcloth,
while others like tweed.
Still others think dusty primitives
are just what they need.

Mamas might prefer vintage, eclectic, or odd.
They might even be funky or groovy.
It might be that a train case is what they'd most like,
or a poster from some classic movie.

Moms can also be DIY types,
digging through old garages to find rusty pipes.
Give them an old desk to paint and distress,
and they'll love it better than some fancy dress.

There are some mothers who are all of the above,
while others might be none.

Some Thoughts About LOVE!

February is traditionally thought of as the month of love.  Hearts and flowers are everywhere and the dominant color is red.  Valentine’s Day is on the way.  Romance is in the air

Love is such a odd concept,isn’t it?  Well, not really odd, so much as multi-layered.  We can say we love our mothers, our first cousins, and our significant others, but we don’t mean that in exactly the same way.  And what about our love for old movies, home-made lasagna, or modern jazz?  We say we “love” a lot of things and people in the course of our lives, don’t we?

Of course, we don’t always mean the same thing when we say that.  Our love for the people in our lives is not really the same as the love we proclaim for other things.  We could more accurately term the latter as “appreciation.”  Which, of course, brings us to YesterNook. 

“I love this place!” 

“I love the things you have here!”

“We love to come here!”

“I love your prices!”

Honestly, however you all mean it, we never get tired of hearing it.  We’ll always strive to earn your appreciation and compliments.  We value our relationship with our friends and customers.  Consider it a valentine from us to you.

Speaking of valentines, here’s a thought:  Those flowers are eventually going to wither away, but if you present them in a fine vintage vase, there will always be a reminder of your thoughtfulness left behind.  How about repacking those chocolates in a sweet vintage candy dish?  Maybe your valentine has been expressing some “love” for a chair we have in the corner or a quilt in one of the upstairs rooms?  There are lots of ways to express your feelings for a special person.  Don’t forget that we have an awesome selection of jewelry and trinkets in the downstairs showcases!

Whatever your plans are, we hope that you have a safe and happy Valentine’s Day! 

Resolutions

Happy 2013 to all our friends and friends-to-be!  We hope that everyone has a healthy and prosperous year filled with wonder and opportunity!  Don't forget to have your traditional black-eyed pea meal today. While you're doing that (and enjoying the ball games), we'd like to share some thoughts about another New Year's tradition:  resolutions.

Every year, with the best of intentions, many of us plan for self-improvement for the new year.  Unfortunately, most of us only last a few weeks, despite all those good intentions.  At YesterNook, we'd like to help our friends make their goals this year.  When you think about it, there are lots of ways that we can become a part of your support system this year, when you make your resolutions.  We'd like to offer the following ideas to all of you resolution-makers out-there.

If you resolve to get out more, or watch less TV, or spend less time online, or something similar, consider that it's easier to meet this goal if you have a planned alternative to these activities.  After all, you can't get out more, if you don't know where you're going.  Why not make YesterNook one of your destinations?  Surely browsing through the many treasures we have to offer will beat watching re-runs of CSI.

Likewise, if you resolve to meet new people, come on down to the store and make a new friend!  Remember our motto:  Enter as strangers.  Leave as friends.  We've seen it happen over and over again.  YesterNook regulars are more than just customers to us.  Getting to know so many wonderful people is an unforeseen, but very welcome, outcome of opening the store.

If you want to get more involved in the community or you want to give back in 2013 or you want to try to make a difference, why not increase the amount of time and money that you spend in small local businesses?  Everyone wins when our locally-based economy is sound.

What if you decide that you need more exercise or you want to get in shape?  Well, if you live in the Schnitzelburg/Germantown area, why not make YesterNook a destination for some of your walks?  If you don't live nearby, surely you can have as much fun climbing the steps to the second floor as you would on some old stair-climbing machine.  How do you think all our second floor vendors got so fit?

Do you think you want to spend more time with friends or family this year?  Well, you'll need to make plans to do it and that means having things in mind to do together!  Why not make your first outing a trip to YesterNook?

Do you want to start a hobby in 2013?  Well, not only do the folks at YesterNook know an awful lot about many different kinds of collectibles, but you can find tons of them in the store.  From comic books to records to salt and pepper shakers, if you can collect it, you can probably find it here.  If you're more of the project-oriented, DIY type, don't forget that we've got a garage full of great stuff that needs a little elbow grease.

This weekend is your last chance to drop by the store in 2012!  We'll be closed on December 31 and January 1.  If you want to "ring out the old" YesterNook style, this is your chance!

There's an old saying that whatever you're doing at the end of the year is what you'll be doing throughout the next year.  We don't know if it's true or not, but we can't think of a better way to spend the next twelve months than searching for special finds at YesterNook!

Traditions

What are your holiday traditions?  Do you have a big Christmas party?  Or go to midnight mass?  Does your family draw names for gifts? 

Maybe you open your gifts on Christmas Eve instead of the next morning.  Or you and your sisters all get together for a big cookie-baking day.  How many of you spend Christmas Day travelling from house to house with gifts and food?  Or go caroling?

December News

The halls are all decked, so it must be December!  You can see it right from the moment you come in the door.

Yes, there's Christmas just about everywhere you look in YesterNook right now.

 

But that's not all that's new in the store.  Not by a long shot.  There's always something happening at YesterNook.

First off, we need to give a slightly belated YesterNook welcome to a vendor who started in November.  Bridgette (Booth 021) is located in the large room called Mayme's Ballroom upstairs.  She's located about halfway down the aisle in that room on the right.

It's going to be a literary weekend at this store this coming Saturday and Sunday, courtesy of the Tiny Bookshop!  We've already announced Chef Nancy Russman's appearance on Saturday, December 15.  On Sunday, December 16, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, Kadie Engstrom will be on hand to talk about her book, "Pathway Through the Past: A Timeline Tour of Historic Sites in the Louisville Metropolitan Area."  If you are at all interested in historic buildings and locations in Louisville, you do not want to miss this one.

Ms. Engstrom has worked with the historic steamboat Belle of Louisville in several capacities since 1972, and has been Education Coordinator since 1992. Kadie has also developed and facilitated many educational experiences for children and adults. She now chairs the Kentuckiana Heritage Consortium, a networking group of representatives of historic sites in the metropolitan area.

Kadie has woven the stories of these historic sites into her book "Pathway Through the Past: A Timeline Tour of Historic Sites in the Louisville Metropolitan Area." Together with other sites and events, she traces the Louisville-area's history from the late 1700s to the modern day.  It’s a perfect gift to give yourself or someone else, and the proceeds will benefit the work of the consortium. Copies purchased from the Tiny Bookshop in YesterNook will receive a 10 percent discount from
the list price.

The Tiny Bookshop is also located upstairs in Mayme's Ballroom.  It's on the left as you go down the aisle.  You'll recognize it by the distinctive black bookshelves.

If you go downstairs to Lizzie's Lounge, be sure to look into the new Agnes Oakley room.  Located in the side room at the bottom of the stairs, where the Christmas Cavern used to be, this room is now dedicated to antiques and primitives.  There's lots of neat stuff down there.

The room is named for Agnes Oakley, the maternal great-grandmother of YesterNook owner Pattie Cape.

Speaking of space names, next time you are waiting to be checked out, glance up at the wall to the left of the register.  You'll see that the cashier space has now been named for Lonnie, Patti's paternal great-grandfather.

It's been a really busy December so far at the store.  As always, we appreciate your support.  Please keep checking in often.  Vendors bring in new items every day.  If you just can't decide what to get that special person for Christmas, YesterNook also has gift certificates.  Ask about them at the counter.

The store will be open regular hours for the rest of the month, but will be closed December 24 and 25 and also on December 31 and January 1.  We hope all of our YesterNook friends have a happy and safe holiday season.

Some things to remember, if you go out shopping today:

Celebrating

This is a busy week for most of us.  If we're not getting ready to travel, then we're getting ready to receive guests. Otherwise, we're making special grocery runs to gather supplies for our annual feasts.  Some of us are looking forward to the football games.  Others can't wait for the big parade.  Some of us will be surrounded by many family members at a large gathering, while others will have a small get-together for a few people.

If you find yourself running short on autumn-themed decor, or special dishes, or even Christmas decorations to put our after the meals is over, we have plenty of all of these at YesterNook.  Maybe you want to use a classic tablecloth this year.  Or you want an interesting vase or bowl for a centerpiece.  Can't find your pickle dish?  Want to decorate with vintage utensils?

With over thirty-five different vendors, there's a chance we may have what you need to make your Thanksgiving complete.  Stop in and check us out.  We're not that far from the Goss Avenue Kroger, so you can drop in YesterNook and still complete that run for cranberries and yams all in one trip!

If you have family or friends staying over the weekend, why not take them in to see your favorite store?  Maybe they'll find something special to take home with them.  We will close Wednesday, November 21st at 2:00 and return to regular hours on Friday. The store will be closed on Thursday to allow us the chance to celebrate with our families too. YesterNook is a great, relaxing place to do your Black Friday shopping.

When we are gathered around our tables giving thanks this year, you can bet that one of the things we're thankful for is all of the find friends and customers we have met through YesterNook.  Thanks for all your support throughout the year.  Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday.

Think Small!

Once again, YesterNook is participating in Small Business Saturday, which will be held on November 24 this year.  This is the Saturday after Black Friday, the largest shopping day of the year.

Please remember YesterNook and other small, local businesses this year as you do your holiday shopping.  Businesses like YesterNook give back to local economies by supporting and using local vendors and suppliers.  In addition, YesterNook supports nearly 40 local vendors, all of whom are also supporting the local economy.

It's Beginning to Look a (Little) Like Christmas...

Sometimes, it can get to be a little annoying to see stores sneaking out the Christmas stuff months early in order to hook some extra sales.  It's okay, however, when it's vintage Christmas stuff!

Seriously, for some of us here at YesterNook, some of the most awesome vintage items of all are Christmas decorations.  From Shiny Brite ornaments to flocked Santas to traditional Nativity sets, there's just something about vintage Christmas.

If you feel the same way we do, then you have to visit the Christmas cavern at YesterNook!  It's a whole room devoted to the wonder of Christmas.  We know it's a few weeks early, but when you see some of these treasures, we don't think you'll mind.  Everything in the Cavern is for sale!

 Of course, there's a Christmas village.

Maybe when you come down, Santa will tell you if you're on the naughty list or the nice list.

Or you can just lounge around with this pair.

Do we have flocked Santas?  More than you can shake a Red-Nosed Reindeer at!

This little guy seems to be working hard to get the place ready for you.

More YesterNook vendors will be getting into the act as we get closer to the holidays.  You'll see the store start to fill up with indented ornaments, Santa head mugs, and many other treasures.  If you remember last year, you know it will be a real wonderland.  In the meantime, though, you can check out the magic in the Christmas Cavern.  It will whet your appetite.

You can find the Christmas Cavern at the bottom of the stairs from the first floor.  Simply turn to the right, and the next room is full of the wonder of Christmas!

You'll know you're in the right spot when you see the pink tree.
